When I open the log files, I get the message shown in the attached

I tried switching to normal and the system monitor looked better until I
moved the mouse and the content of the GUI window disappeared. After
much difficulty I was able to return the Visual Effects to None. I'm
using an IBM Thinkpad R40 notebook with an ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY

I just checked what would happen if I switched to "Normal" Visual
Effects. After making the switch, the System Monitor window started
painting properly again (so did Gnome Do) which leads me to conclude
that this may be metacity bug because I know that "Normal" uses Compiz.

I should add that the window is still responsive to input. For example,
I know roughly where the "X" button is so I'm able to close the window.
