I am using a Dell Inspiron 1420 and I usually turned off the touchpad while I had a mouse plugged in. Now even going in and telling PreferencesMouseTouchpad and unselecting the Disable touchpad while typing I continue to have the touchpad responding to every touch. Annoying to a lazy typist. --

Same problem with an Asus M51VR. With ubuntu 9.04, i haven't problems , the fn key works and disabled the mousepad. Now, with 9.10, i've problems. The fn key (F9 in my laptop and a with a quickkey) doesn't works. With Gsynaptics i can disabled the mousepad but it enable after any key was pressed.

I have this problem too in karmic. I found a way to work around it. I installed gsynaptics to disable the touchpad (because my other problem is that the function key no longer works.) Then in System/Preferences/Mouse/Touchpad, I unselect Disable touchpad while typing. Now the touchpad does not
