I submitted the patch you provided upstream, and it was well received
(see http://reviewboard.kde.org/r/3082). That means the bug will be
fixed in the next KDE SC release (4.4.2). Thanks a lot for your work !

It would be nice if somebody could get this one packaged in lucid and
karmic-updates or -backports :)

It's been a month with no feedback about this bug, so I subscribed both
the Kubuntu bug team and the author of the plasmoid. Sorry if this is
the wrong way to get feedback.
Fyi I'm using Kmail in IMAP mode (gmail account).

I have the same problem with a fresh 64bit install of Kubuntu 9.10 (I
haven't tried it with Kopete, but with Kmail it happen exactly the
same).
