to me this whole extra address book for syncing seems like a totally broken
system. but maybe I'm not getting the concept.
I too got the issues with duplicate entries and entries missing in my google
account.
But besides that there is something I'm still not able to fully understand.

Changing the DNS servers to google DNS did also solve this problem for
me.
I'm in Canada and was alternating between Rogers' Cable DNS servers and
OpenDNS, neither of which work properly.
