Thank you for spending time on my issue.
Messing around with the volume controls I find I now do have back
sound in conjunction with Lucid Lynx 2.6.31-20. The 2.6.32-18-generic
version of Lucid will not boot for me (yet).

ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev. Make sure that you're running 2.6.32-18-generic
in Lucid.
