I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. I believe the next
kernel update fixed the issue. I'm on 2.6.31-20-generic and it's
working now.

Please install linux-backport-modules-alsa-karmic-generic and reboot.
(Also note that just about all of your analog mixer controls are
muted, though Master reportedly needs to be unmuted, too.)

Appears I don't need too but I'll keep this for reference. Although I
may loose everything again after rebooting
I went back into Sound Preferences and I had sound themes OFF. I
clicked UBUNTU as the sound theme and everything immediately started
working I heard a confirmation sound event!
I rebooted and I just lost it again. No reason. All the setting
appear the same. This time turning on/off sound events themes didn't
work. I'll proceed with your original suggestion for the backport.

The backport didn't work. I had sound for awhile then lost it again.
Usually after a reboot. I tried again mv ~/.pulse ~/.old-pulse and
rebooted. Of course my sound was off, I went in chose my digital
device and it started working. I reboot and lost it all.
I un-installed the backport and
There's https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio/Log that's useful for
capturing the daemon side.

This is a pulse1.log I do not know where it came from. But when
generating a verbose log I discovered it.
Sound is completely gone. Several hours ago all I had to do is delete
the .pulse or turn on/off sound themes and the sound would come back
until reboot. Now none of that is working.
**
This is a log generated but not during a re-creation of the problem.
This was created while sound was completely missing I cant get sound to
work at all now. I have another pulse1.log I do not know where it came
from I will also attach. Maybe it's one that was generated when the
sound failed.
Possible fix? and Issue.
Something Daniel said struck me in an earlier post that everything was showing
MUTED. In the sound preference GUI nothing was muted so this surprised me but
I let it go... Every time I called up the Sound Preference whether from the
top right ICON of from the System
Yep, on re-boot they all reset to MUTE. Well... Not all like the first time I
saw it but enough ere muted including MAIN that I had lost sound again.
I un-muted from the ALSA Mixer and I have sound again. The new 9.10
Sound Preference shows no indication of muting. That and I have no idea
