Diaboflos solution doesn't work for me. Problem appears on kernels
2.6.31-14, 2.6.31-17 and 2.6.32-10. Was working fine for the fisrt 5-10
times after fresh install.
Last message on screen:

I have tested the solution by diaboflo and installed kernel
2.6.32-8-generic and it seems to work! Now my laptop powers down (tried
4 times until now) *and* hibernate also works now (tried 3 times until
now).

I reported the same thing issue for debian, and there some one pointed
me into the right direction:
you need kernel 2.6.32. you can install it at your own risk like this:
add this line to /etc/apt/source.list:
deb http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid main
create /etc/apt/preferences:

I also encounter this problem with my Acer 4001 WLMI, although sometimes
(1 out of 5-10 times) it does power down, but this seems to be
completely random (i tried with wi-fi disabled/enabled, on battery
power, ... but it is really unpredictable if it will power down)

When I install kernel 2.6.28-16 from jaunty, it all works.
Turning off KMS by adding radeon.modeset=0 did not help, though.
