Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

In Ubuntu 9.04, the 5.1 sound worked properly, but after installing 9.10
(i386), some speakers are too silent.
After startup, the front speakers are always set to volume 0, with alsamixer I
can turn them up. Then they will have proper volume until *reboot*. After
re-login, the volumes are changed again, but front speakers are still okay.
The LFE and center speakers do play sound but they are way too silent. Even if
I turn the subwoofer setting in the Sound preferences dialog to maximum AND the
LFE setting in alsamixer to maximum, the subwoofer and center speakers are
barely hearable.

Workaround for the subwoofer:
Change the Device Profile in the Sound Preferences to another Profile and then
back again. After this, the subwoofer and center speakers are good. amixer does
not show any difference after this.
But for each new application that plays sound this has to be repeated. When
playing music, this has to be repeated after each song...

The tricks from Pulseaudio FAQ do not help.

Please give me a hint how to debug this further.
