I just upgraded to 10.04 (and not a fresh install). I've been running
for over a day and I don't see these kernel panic messages any more. I
also re-installed ubuntu-desktop and log in with GDM just fine. To get
by, I had just been logging in with a text terminal an starting X with
startx...

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
