In particular, from Applications|Internet|Ubuntu One, the choices for
show icon are Always, When updating, and Never. It sounds like
you might be happiest with Never, though as Joshua notes, When
updating

Thank you for taking the time to file this bug report. To address the
issues you had with Ubuntu One:
1. We plan on allowing user defined folders in Lucid, which means you
won't be forced to use the ~/Ubuntu One directory to sync files.
