Thank you for taking the time to make ubuntu better.
You shouldnt be able to update from hardy to karmic directly you need to go via
jaunty to karmic.
"The unable to get exclusive lock" means you are using apt somewhere else and
is unrelated to the bug.
Im marking this bug as invalid.
