Ryan, thats a no-go on -16 or the newer -17 kernel. My system still
freezes up. It seems a lot of bug fixes went into the driver which are
present only in the 2.6.32 series.

I have tried what you suggested, but Ubuntu (karmic) freezes immediately and
the caps lock key begins to flash. I have not yet try a kernel patch.

thanks for the filename to search for. copying the directory
rtl8192su_linux_2.6.0002.0708.2009/firmware/RTL8192SU (containing
rtl8192sfw.bin)
into /lib/firmware, unplugging the usb adapter and putting it back in worked
great - instant N connection.
Didn't need any kind of kernel patch

Brian, thanks for your response. Sorry for the delay in uploading the
required information. I didnt know which package this bug belonged to so
I left it unclassified. I'm sure the more experienced guys here can
classify it better.
Hans, there are couple of key differences between this bug and
I downloaded the mainline 2.6.32 dailybuild kernel source, enabled the
staging drivers and compiled it. The device seems to work. But I had to
search for the firmware which I found on the Internet. Not sure if it is
to be trusted. The filename is:
rtl8192su_linux_2.6.0002.0708.2009.tar.gz . It
