Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

I updated karmic a few days ago, while 3 users has X sessions open via
switch-user.
The account I was using had no problems thereafter, but the other 2 that were
logged in
during update couldn't login (either by switch-user or, after reboot, fresh gdm
login).
They got the screen-wiggle and back to login box. Other accounts unaffected.

Looked at differences in $HOME contents, saw .config/monitors.xml existed in
these 2 accounts,
but not elsewhere. Renamed/removed this and login was happy again.

I'm guessing this is xserver-xorg install-related failure, but not sure.

Also guessing there was some change in this transient file, and for safety
during install,
it's removed from $HOME/.config, making current user safe, but not removed from
other users'
$HOME

I saw a SEGV in /var/log/X.0.log, now overwritten.
Here's a .xsession.errs.old, which maybe helpful...
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...

unlikely to be helpful

/var/log/dpkg.log snippet from the failure-triggering install is ....

I'd guess xserver-xorg install was the trigger
