The preferred result is that Gwibber just uses the Messaging Menu if it is available. Alternatively, it should use the Application Indicators. And only as a fallback, the old systray. The UI in the preferences can simply ask a single question: [ ] Display in the panel ... or thereabouts, MPT

I suppose the confusion stems from the fact that Gwibber has a notification icon today, though it *also* works with the Messaging Menu. I believe that kenvandine is correct, Gwibber should continue to use the messaging indicator on Ubuntu and use it's existing notification icon on platforms that do
