It hasn't happened for several weeks, and when it does, closing and re-
opening the application takes care of the problem.
Usually it's PopTray appearing on the desktop rather than in the right
panel.

you try?
Could you please confirm whether this is still an issue with a recent version
of wine (preferably 1.2) from https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wine/+archive/ppa ?

It's not an issue in Maverick, where I'm running 1.2.
It seemed to be OK in Lucid for quite a while, but it appeared on the
desktop recently instead of it's normal panel location.
