There is no need to do anything further. It isn't a pulseaudio bug at
all but a linux bug, and it's fixed in the backports of alsa-driver
that you installed.

Could you please try building the alsa-source kernel modules for your
kernel like so?
1. sudo apt-get install module-assistant
2. sudo m-a get alsa-source
3. sudo m-a build alsa-source
4. sudo m-a install alsa-source
5. Reboot

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please install "linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic"
(then reboot) because that package enables audio on quite a few HP
laptop models and contains much improved support for microphone auto-
switching.
