A Gentoo user has reported the same issue using Liferea 1.6.0:

I forgot to mention the work-around to prevents Liferea from crashing in
these situations:
Goto Tools - Preferences - Browser. Make sure Disable Javascript
is ticked.
This works for me after closing and restarting Liferea. Hope this is of
use to anyone.
