I've attached another screenshot showing what it looks like in firefox
on some websites with certain background shading of text. This example

Would you mind reassigning this to metacity? I've been looking further
into it and I'm pretty sure now that it's got something to do with
blending not working properly when compiz isn't active.

This is the banshee fade effect. I've attached a screenshot of the fade
in progress (this happens right after mouseover of the icon).
Unfortunately I just noticed this also happens in firefox on twitter
when messages fade in, so it appears it's actually non-banshee specific.
I've no idea where
