Sorry I didn't respond to your earlier message. Since I have only
ubuntu systems in the house, I didn't actually need winbind, although
for some reason I have to use numerical addresses without it. So, since
I had a workaround, and other things came up, I sort of forgot all about
it. I'll try

I'd try install winbind, start the service, try using apt-get, get the
syslog. Try to get details on why apt fails. Is apt the only thing that
fails ?
