You need to install the linux-686 package to make sure you get correct
updates, and correct dependency packages, like linux-restricted-modules.

I looked at the dependencies of linux-686 and linux-686-smp (which i
have installed) and still haven't resolved the issue.
The dependency tree as I see it is:
linux-686-smp 2.6.15.22 depends on:
- linux-image-686
- linux-restricted-modules-686
