It's particularly frustrating for me because I use AIM for RPGs a lot
and I can't get invites to the chat with Empathy.

Hi there,
Try to send a chat room invitation from another chat client logged in as a
different user. For me my colleague send a chat room invitation from PIDGIN
(even from AIM chat client). But I didn't receive any of the chat request.
