I found the problem. It was my fault. I needed to use some extra
commands from an earlier install in 9.04 to get cheese to run picking a
certain input from a tv tuner card I have and that was in
/home/marty/bin/cheese. When I did the clean install of 64 bit karmic,
I just copied over my ~bin dir

If you browse to /usr/bin and double click on cheese, the program will
run. If you change the "Application preferences" in menu editor, from
the default of "cheese" to "usr/bin/cheese", the program will now run
from the Applications menu without errors.
