This is still occurring in OpenOffice 3.2.1 on Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick
Meerkat RC. In fact I can't see the X at all. And the diamond shape is
still drawn with a closed path.

Yes, this is still an issue on Lucid.
I've just run apport-collect 511312 to update the platform info for this bug.
The behaviour is exactly the same as originally reported... (plus when
importing SVG's containing bitmaps, the bitmaps are not displayed).
I am currently working around the issue

SVG import in open office is currently at a very early experimental
stage, you should have a read of this page:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/SVG_Import_Filter If you must
import vectors consider converting them into a better supported format
(such as emf) using something like inkscape
