apparently someone else must have felt that workaround to be important
enough to include, so we can consider that a fix. Since this issue
isn't occurring by default anymore, I'll close it as fixed.

console (F1) or a second X window, X crashes.

Log-in to Gnome, Press CTRL+ALT+F1

Please apologize that I didn't find this solution (out of Ubuntu
documentation) earlier. Nevertheless, this could be a problem for other
