Assuming that you are pxe booting your Ubuntu installation over the
network, have you tried applying the debian installer appends to the
booting ubuntu kernel?
eg.
My d-i install entry for pxelinux:
label debian
kernel d-i/2.6/linux
append console=tty0 initrd=d-i/2.6/initrd.gz r
