Well, installing unattended-upgrades will not do anything by default.
In additon to installing it, it needs to be enabled explicitely via a
apt configuration variable. Then it will start to do scary things ;)

Aha! I only just noticed that unattended-upgrades is part of the default
ubuntu and xubuntu install. I therefore agree the current configuration
file defaults make sense.
It is NOT part of the default install of Kubuntu. Changing that would be
a better wishlist item.

Thanks for your wishlist report.
There is a additional way to enable automatic updates. Use
System/Administration/SoftwareProperties, there is a checkbutton there.
I'm unsure about enabling unattended-upgrades by default, it seems like
something that really needs a broader discussion.
