Public bug reported:

When I try to boot the new 2.6.17-4-686 kernel, it panics, I have this
message when grub starts it :

Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel

[17179569.936000] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block(0,0)
[17179569.936000]

I also noticed that the installation of this kernel doesn't update
grub's menu.lst (I did this manually) and that I haven't a
/boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-4-686 file on my system, and the reinstall of
the kernel changes anything of that.

** Affects: linux-source-2.6.17 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Untriaged
         Status: Unconfirmed
