I think I may have found another workaround. If possible, try doing it the old-school way - add/update monitor and screen sections in your xorg.conf based on the mode info in your xorg.log, similar to comment 17 in the fdo bug at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17255 This is

Today i found a workaround to get my external monitor working. When I plug-in my monitor only after bootup (when my Gnome session is active), the Display Preferences can properly recognize my monitor, and i can use it at full resolution (1920x1080). :-D Please let me know if You need any logs...
