Update manager pushed out a copy Plymouth today. The splash is working
and the graphics don't have a problem. I'm marking the bug as invalid

Yep, certainly looks like a conflict with Plymouth and X, or the driver.
This is the fourth restart and it's still working!

I think I know what it /could/ be! I have been using a clean (no-nvidia,
no-xorg.conf) system for a while now and today I removed plymouth:
sudo apt-get purge ^.*plymouth.*\$
Anyway, upon installing NVIDIA 195.36.08 through Jockey, this is the
/third/ restart and Compiz through OpenGL is working

Well that's odd because the installed worked and it installed the
drivers, the one from the repo didn't work. :/
Not really. My install is even more messed up now because the drivers
don't work at all and X keeps crashed and I can't even get GDM working
properly. So my only option is fresh install.

I have received an update to the X server packages and have installed a

@illbashu, same problem here, except compiz succeeds in starting - while

I think you already stated it in another bug report, but to be sure: you
did remove your xorg.conf? If do, did you let jockey recreate it (if
that's possible), did you use nvidia-xconfig or did you just removed
that file (letting xorg configure itself on the fly)?
