This problem is gone in newer Ubuntu versions. You may close this bug.

same here, i have to run
sudo update-grub
manually at every single kernel upgrade (this happened after a faulty dapper
installation: grub did not install and I had to install it manually). is there
any option somewhere to turn automatic update-grub on ?
