Ah-hah a 4-day old message on my Ubuntu One Dashboard reads:
strikeShow Me the Money/strike
Notes and Contacts sync between desktops and the cloud is disabled
while we ramp up for the new users. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Looks like U1 is including some invalid XML, specifically the br from
HTML (which in XHTML would need to be closed as br/). This is just a
guess, though.
Have you viewed or edited any notes in the U1 web interface?
