I discovered today that the problem can be circumvented by placing the
laptop with open lid in the docking station. Then the external display
will always be recognized.

I got the attached debug info for a series of plugging in and out the
laptop of the docking station, but it does not contain traces of the
hangcheck from above.

Alright. Testing locally, I can reproduce (2) with apparently 100%
ease.
Performing these steps:
1) Boot laptop in docking station, lid closed
2) Remove laptop from docking station
3) Open lid and wakeup laptop
4) Close lid and sleep
5) Place laptop in docking station
6) Wakeup with lid closed
Aha. It seems that this is specific to VGA outputs. I've run into bug
#600116 (filed separately to attach all the relevant information and
because it's different hardware) performing the steps with a VGA
connector attached, but not a DVI/DisplayPort connection.
In this case, dmesg ends up full

Running the apport script will generate a .crash file in /var/crash,
named something like xserver-xorg-video-

I just reproduced the problem on a T61 and opened the lid. I could login
and saw that the displays were not cloned, but that the external display
was set as secondary display. The screensaver login screen will only
show on the primary display.

I've run the following sequence 20 times on a T61:
1) start laptop with closed lid in docking station
2) login
3) remove laptop from docking station via the undock button
4) open laptop lid, login via screensaver
5) close laptop lid, suspend
6) place laptop in docking station and resume via
Ok. There seem to now be different issues here:
1) Hans-Gerd reports that newer upstream kernels fail to drive the external
monitor correctly. It looks like the problem there is that when X starts it
chooses to clone the screens, looks for the best mode common to the laptop
display and the
Bryce, is there any information you need there? You set the bug as
incomplete but there is a debug log waiting for review and no question?
I'm changing it to New again but let me know if that's wrong

@Chris: I tested both, the maverick kernel as well as the drm-intel-next kernel
as you mentioned in your comment.
With both kernel I have the following situation: The internal LID is closed and
the VGA port is connected to an external LCD.
On the LCD I get Frequency out of range: 12MHz / 15Hz

bug #488328, which should have been fixed in the 2.6.32-15 kernel, then
fixed again in 2.6.32-19. It looks like your bug might be more subtle,
so this might not fix it for you.

A similar problem exists with resuming an docked x61 with laptop lid
closed. Here is the test:
The following test resulted in a black screen of a Thinkpad x61:
1) Boot laptop in docking station, lid closed
2) Remove laptop from docking station
3) Open lid and wakeup laptop
4) Close lid and sleep
The test was done with Lucid, xserver-xorg-video-intel version
2:2.9.1-1ubuntu16.
