Updated kernel doesn't have problem with freezing any more.
KMS is not working. I'm tracking the activity in bug 509273.
I think that this bug can be closed.

After more queries in Launchpad it seems that this problem can be
related to ATI KMS.
I have disabled it for now and will see how it will affect the
situation.
