The problem seems to be with the controls part of the themes. Clicking
Customize and choosing another control layout does the trick...
However, all of the controls that come preinstalled look like crap
compared to Ambiace/Radiance...

This is not a bug in light themes. This bug also exists with moblin a few other
themes in ubuntu and light themes.

It also looks terrible for a few programs that use a small packet
bouncing back and forth in the progress bar (see my updloaded
screenshot). I think this happens in Tomboy (pictured), software-centre
and synaptic for various tasks.

Ya, they really look bad but can this might be due to the reason that
with the new theme we can set the size of panel to 21px? (you get
something you loose something?)
