always been an issue for me, and makes me irate every single time.

I've just tried to reproduce this problem in Ubuntu 10.10 and can't. So
I'm marking this as 'invalid' for "Synaptic in Ubuntu". Please reopen
this if you can reproduce this issue.
I have not checked this with the default update-manager dialog. It would
be good someone could check that.

Anything I can do to help this? Is it possible to write a custom rule
for Compiz to make Synaptic get out of the damned way?

Synaptic also steals focus from other windows when it is minimized: both
the main window and the dialog window un-minimize themselves, and the
dialog window puts itself in front of everything else.
