I see this too on a university network (hundreds of printers from dozens
of dept's, etc...), 10.04 LTS.
e.g. 2 hours of CPU use after 6 days of uptime:
avahi 1532 1.4 0.0 35232 2608 ?SN May31 124:14 avahi-
daemon: running
workaround 1: uninstall avahi-daemon and all that
