About gxine, it seems to have worse performance showing (at least some
MPEG) videos than Xfmedia or VLC so I wouldn't recommend gxine for
Xubuntu.

indeed xfmedia is buggy and hangs often, hence needs to be killed. The plan is
to be replaced by the more mature gxine for edgy so priority is set to low.

files, not with mp3 files.

I confirm this. Exactly as stated. Only option once this occurs is a
`killall xfmedia`.
