Is this still occurring in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat? If so, there are a number of HDMI fixes (EDID detection, EDID parsing, underscan calculation and others) upstream in the recently released 2.6.37 kernel. A PPA of this kernel is available at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
