Alwin Garside, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development

xgamma -display :0 -gamma 1.0

Ernst, seems like a good guess. The way to test is to see if this
command causes the screen to restore:
xgamma -gamma 1.0
Alwin, could you try seeing if the above gets the system back?
If that works around the black screen, then yeah we can set this as a
dupe of #546578.
