Happened to me too, while it was working before. Got it working again
after following the hint in #216204: apt-get install compiz compiz-gnome
So perhaps this should be noted as a duplicate of that bug.
One of the 'apt-get dist-upgrade's of last week must have caused it. I
didn't notice it until

OK, compiz was not installed by default or was removed before by an
update.
