Same problem on a Dell Inspiron 8600 WITH a NVIDIA card!!
This is major, it breaks again an working setup Every one which does
not know how to install in the console a older package is lost!!
And its not the first time: Look at this report nobody cared sofar

I have this problem both ati(mobility randeon 9000) and sis devices in
last ubuntu dapper update. I lost 5 stations today... I really worried
about ubuntu integrity.

I have to confirm, i experienced the same. Using a ATI X600, OEMmed for
Toshiba here, and no sceens found, neither with ati nor with fglrx
drivers. Have not tested vesa though.
System worx perfectly fine after downgrade just that package to
1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10 again
