Looks like this is not an update-manager issue. 10.04 LiveCD (written to
USB key) doesn't boot either.

Yes, as described in bug #511001, I was able to boot 10.04 after adding
i915.modeset=1 to grub boot.

Same problem on my Dell Inspiron 510m.
(tried to report a bug 10 minutes ago but launchpad reported timeout and
I lost my report)
Notebook freezes at boot after the upgrade to 10.04. Ubuntu logo is
