I can confirm this, this is often actually worse than the program crash
itself! Besides that, it also fills up my home directory with >100mb
files!

I don't know what type of system you have mine isn't the fastest and yet
when apport starts to do its thing it certainly does choke my system. I
end up killing it instead of waiting for it to finish. Next time an
application crashes use top and look at the cpu usage ;)
