Damnvid currently depends on a unredistributable ffmpeg build, and thus cannot
be included in Ubuntu. I have however found it to work fine with official
ubuntu ffmpeg build and the correct codecs.
A working package can be found in the official damnvid ppa. To use:
sudo apt-add-repository
