I can modify java-wrappers to handle that automatically (ie the
conversion from http_proxy to the appropriate java command-line
options).

Have you tried using an UPPERCASE environment variable HTTP_PROXY ? It's
normal that the lowercase one does not work.

Actually, Vincent, this is one of the few environment variables that
*must* be in lowercase, or it will not be recognized.
