I am experiencing this problem as well, although I found a fix. I
removed the file $HOME/.texmf-config/xdvi/XDvi and the error message
stopped appearing. Even commenting out the entire file didn't work; I
had to remove it. The file is attached.
Here's the texlive packages currently installed:
Just upgraded to Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) and here it works without
any rendering error.

For the statistics... I installed today xdvik, version 22.84.10, on Ubuntu
7.04 and I have
the same problem: Couldn't allocate enough colors - expect low display
quality.
It seems that also the Inverse Search doen't work but this could be a problem

LaTeX environment Kile. In the next
...and I can also confirm this bug. Running Ubuntu 7.04 on my ThinkPad
laptop. Will assist if required.

Hi,
I can also confirm this problem (xdvi: Couldn't allocate enough colors -

Damned. This is really strange...
So my last resort before giving up is the following:
Please call

Hi Norbert.
This is the only app showing problems under X. Other ancient apps like
xfig seem to work fine (AFAICT).
If you want me to compile xdvi with some obscure option please, don't
hesitate to ask.
Again, thank you very much for your efforts.

Something different, I forgot completely what you wrote at first, that
xdvi cannot allocate enough colors.
What is you colordepth? 24 or 36? Or less or something different?
Best wishes
Norbert

Dr. Norbert Preining
It is 24.
(Well, at least default color depth in xorg.conf shows 24). I was about
to attach a dump of xdpyinfo, but I have noticed that there is already
one somewhere in the middle of the xdvi.log report.

Hi Will!
Thanks for the upload, but this is not a dvi file!
$ xdvi l2e-usrguide.dvi
xdvi.bin: Fatal error: l2e-usrguide.dvi: Not a DVI file.
$ file l2e-usrguide.dvi
l2e-usrguide.dvi: data
Are you sure that this is the correct file?
AND: We got two different reports, one stating that it does
Here goes a sample dvi file that shows the problem for me. (In fact any
dvi file does).
I have tried moving ~/.xdvirc out of the way, bt the problem stays the
same.
PD: Sorry for the delay uploading a test... but I was away.

Hi Miguel!
Thanks for the file, it shows up here without any quirks. Ok lets track this
down: Can you do the following:
strace -trace=all xdvi example.dvi trace.log 21
and add the file trace.log here.
Thanks a lot

Thanks, but strange enough this does not show a lot differences. One
thing I am not sure, can you check what files you have in
$HOME/.texmf-config/
?
Thanks.
$HOME/.texmf-config/ is empty.
In any case I have tried to run xdvi again, this time moving both
.texmf-config and .texmf-var away, but the problem is still there.
Thanks for your help and patience.

Hi,
I have the same problem and would like to add some info from my attempts
to figure out what is wrong.
This probem is not confined to TexLive but occurs with TeTeX also.
However the problem is not so severe with TeTeX. In TexLive XDVI crashes
when trying to open any DVI file. However with
I have the same problem with xdvi from texlive/ubuntu.
Starting xdvi in a shell yields
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset
an Xdvi warning window opens up with the message
Couldn't allocate enough colors - expect low display
Well, I haven't noticed any other problem with X applications. For instance
xfig works right and doesn't complain about colors allocations.
I'll be really glad to do any test you want me to do.
Btw, this is still happening with the latest texlive package available
in feisty. (Version:
(Debian Maintainer speaking here)
This sounds very strange, and it didn't happen on the 15 computers on which I
have my packages running, and nobody else has reported this. Are you sure that
there is no other problem on your Computer, like the X server is configured in
a wrong way, or something
This only happens with tetexlive.
xdvi from tetex-bin works right.
