it's the same bug for me using Ubuntu 10.10 (maverick meerkat) with a radeon
4225 and the fglrx driver.
if you use chromium and pop up the menu, the whole screen flickers heavily and
chromium enters the fullscreen mode. Oo

On the mobility 4200 I have gnome-shell from the repo's lock the system
when I run it (either via ALT + F2, or from gdm with the Gnome3 option)
If I build from source, it runs slow as heck and also suffers from some
serious gamma / brightness corruption

Currently we haven't any suitable opensource driver for R800. And that's
a really BIG problem. Unity doesn't work, nor GNOME Shell - both using
Mutter.

i will see if i can get full hardware acceleration with this,
but i'm not intending to actually use gnome shell anyway(until its ready and i
actually like it)

spoke with gnome-shell developers, they motivated its not their fault
but ati, and that the driver is closed source and they can not help with
that. i fixed it by installing the radeon driver from xorg edgers ppa
and all works fine.
