This is maybe due to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LibAtaForAtaDisks in progress (or
regress).
At some point I had a UUID instead of /dev/hda1 in my /boot/grub/menu.lst, now
it is back to /dev/hda1. There is a kopt= line with UUID, but it is overridden
by a kopt_2_6= line with /dev/hda1.
John, BTW
uname -r and /boot/grub/menu.lst all say 2.6.17-7-386

I get the same thing. Without the quiet flag, I can see that the kernel
gets stuck on my USB CD writer. Problem with the usb storage driver?

Try also to remove the quiet boot option.

I let it sit long enough and it said /dev/sda1/ does not exist so
changing it to /dev/hda1 worked fine. added splash back to kernel args.
and everything boots usplash shows not text. I will file a bug on
usplash when i get a few minutes.
