I just tested with this release of OpenOffice on KUbuntu 10.10 64-bit
AMD and the problem is fixed here.

better. Could you please attach a Writer file that demonstrates this
problem? Does this issue occur in LibreOffice Writer?

This bug was confirmed. I do not use Libre Office and cannot risk it
now. I believe the current release of OpenOffice has fixed it, but
cannot be sure.
I cannot risk installing Libre Office since it attempts to upgrade
OpenOffice and supported versions of OpenOffice are still being
distributed
