It is not scrotwm bug at all. I just got same issue with dwm. Last think I did was alt-- (alt left arrow). What I saw on console tty1 was output of some commands I typed in xterm. So this must be bug of X. Once I had xterm and I did sudo su - and after crash I got root shell in console tty1 !!!
